Novel Energy Effective Metallic Materials for Automative and General Engineering Application (LWM)

Development of lightweight environment friendly and energy efficient materials / processes /components with improved properties and performance to cater to sustainable growth, conservation of resources and control of environment.
The sub-objectives of the proposed work are as follows:
i. Ultra High strength aluminium alloys through severe plastic deformation such as ECAP, cryoprocessing and powder processing.
ii. Synthesis of metal (Al/Steel/Ti) foam by continuous (melt) process and powder metallurgy route, design and development of sandwich panels / foam filled sections.
iii. High integrity gravity casting, near net shape castings using pressurized solidification and semi-solid processing such as Pressure Die Casting (low & high), Centrifugal Casting, and Rheocasting of Al and Mg alloys and composites.
iv. Synthesis of advanced metal (Al/Mg) matrix composites with ultrafine dispersoids through liquid and powder metallurgy routes such as in-situ using self propagating high temperature synthesis process (SHS) and ex situ techniques employing ultrasonic vibration.
v. Deformation processability (rolling, extrusion, forging etc.) of Al and Mg alloys and their composites.
vi. Development of nanostructured hard tribocoatings using sputtering system, high velocity oxy fuel and plasma enhanced vapour deposition.
vii. Software for casting design and solidification by using basic commercial casting software such as autocast and virtual casting. Finite element technique and process modeling for the optimization of forming parameters to realize defect free materials/components.
