The World Health Organization (WHO) notes that long-term exposure to drinking water that contains more than 1.5 ppm fluoride can lead to health problems. The Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) sets the optimal level of fluoride for preventing tooth decay at 1.5 ppm. Ingestion of excess fluoride can cause fluorosis which affects the teeth and bones. Long-term exposure to arsenic-rich water can cause various health effects including cancer problems in skin, lungs, bladder and kidney. An excess amount of iron in the ground water creates health and economic complications leading to stomach problems, nausea, vomiting, effects on skin, etc. Looking into this problem, CSIR-CMERI has developed Domestic Fluoride, Arsenic & Iron Removal (FAIR) filter.
